How to check whether a steel is certified ?

The factories put the mark on the labels of their steels. The certificate is valid for one factory and has got a maximum validity of 3 years. It is granted for a product according to one of the following standards:

  • XP A 35-014 (Reinforcing steels – Stainless steel bars, wire rod and wire),
  • NF A 35-016-1 (Reinforcing steel – Weldable ribbed steel – Part 1: Bars and coils),
  • NF A 35-016-2 (Reinforcing steel – Weldable ribbed steel – Part 2: Welded fabrics),
  • NF A 35-017 (Steels for concrete reinforcement– Non-weldable ribbed bars and coils),
  • NF A 35-019-1 (Reinforcing steel – Weldable idented steel – Part 1: Bars and coils),
  • NF A 35-019-2 (Reinforcing steel – Weldable dented steel – Part 2: Welded fabrics),
  • NF A 35-024 (Steels for concrete reinforcement – Surface welded fabrics composed of wires of diameter less than 5 mm),
  • XP A 35-025 (Steel products – Hot dip galvanised bars and coils for reinforced concrete),
  • NF A 35-030 (Steel products – High bond ribbed bars for concrete poles, supports for over head lines).

The certified steels bear a rolling mark specific to the producer and mentioned on the NF – AFCAB certificate.

What AFCAB requests to grant a certificate

The aciers pour béton armé mark may be granted to the reinforcing steels fulfilling these standards. The specifications included in the AFCAB “Aciers pour béton armé” certification rules attest that these steels:

  • Fulfil the current standards,
  • Are checked at each stage of the manufacturing,
  • Optionally, keep their properties after having been bent and straightened one time.

The checks that are performed

The factory shall implement a quality system which is based on a sectorial application of the NF EN ISO 9001 standard. It shall in particular assure:

  • the control of the final check documents,
  • the check of the semi-finished products that may be purchased,
  • the identification of the finish products,
  • the traceability to the cast (for weldable bars and coils only),
  • the control of the manufacturing process,
  • the control of the conformity of the manufactured products,
  • the control of the measurement and test apparatus,
  • the control of non conformities and corrective actions,
  • the storage of records, especially the final test documents,
  • the internal quality audits,
  • the qualification of the personnel in charge of adjusting the manufacturing parameters, measurements and tests, checks of apparatus for measurements and tests,
  • the implementation of a statistical survey of the long term quality of the products.
